The Medical Care On Board Ship course is designed for crew members, maritime officers and designated personnel who carry the responsibility of providing medical care in the unique setting of a seagoing vessel. With limited access to shore-based medical facilities, this programme equips participants with the knowledge and skills to assess, manage and stabilise medical situations on board ship, in full compliance with the requirements of the STCW Convention (especially Section A-VI/4-2) and maritime regulatory authorities.
Throughout the course, participants engage in both theoretical and hands-on training which covers a breadth of topics ranging from casualty assessment, first aid and basic life support, to management of trauma, disease and medication administration in the maritime environment. With a focus on practical application, the course enables learners to use ship-board medical equipment, communicate effectively with shore-based medical advisors and implement coordinated medical assistance schemes.
Upon successful completion, participants will hold a recognised certificate allowing them to assume medical-care duties on board vessel operations or offshore installations. This certification supports maritime safety standards, helps end-employers and flag-states demonstrate compliance, and promotes readiness in the event of medical emergencies at sea where prompt and appropriate care is critical.
